As Mr. Freedom predicted two months ago, the Constitutional Court has just overtuned parliament's unprecedented vote to impeach President Roh. After the verdict, I said to myself, "Yes, Korea is still Korea." The verdict says that the President violated the constitutional law, but his violations are not serious enough to be impeached.

The President violates the constitutional law and he is allowed to hold such an important position. It would be impossible for the law-abiding country. As you know, the constitutional law is different from the other laws. Suppose Roh violates the traffic law, it would be OK not to be impeached, depending upon the degree of violation. But he violates the Constitution of the Republic of Korea and is allowed to keep his job as the President of ROK? That is the verdict of the Constitutional Court. What a unprecedented verdict it is! What a unprecedented comedy it is!

대통령은 헌법을 위반하고 그럼에도 그는 그렇게 중요한 지위를 계속 유지할 것을 허락 받는다. 법을 잘 지키는 국가에서는 불가능한 일입니다. 당신도 알다시피, 헌법은 다른법률과 다릅니다. 노 대통령이 교통법을 위반했다고 했을 때, 위반의 정도에 따라 탄핵 당하지 않아도 괜찮습니다. 그러나 그는 대한민국 헌법을 위반하였고 그럼에도 대한민국 대통령으로써의 지위를 계속 유지할 것을 허락 받습니다. 그것이 헌법재판소의 판결입니다. 참으로 기상천외한 판결이 아닐 수 없습니다. 참으로 지금껏 보지 못한 코미디가 아닐 수 없습니다.

천사님, 이제 그 판결은 "미국에서 보신탕은 법적으로 허용되어야 한다"고 내가 외치지 못하게 만듭니다. 아시다시피, 만약 당신이 이 나라에 살아본 적이 있다면, 사실 미국에서 보신탕허용이란 전혀 불가능한 일입니다. 그래요, 나는 당신에게 기상천외한 농담을 했습니다. 그런데 세상에, 나의 기상천외한 농담과 법정에서의 기상천외한 판결의 차이점이 뭐지요?

In fact, this verdict crushes my last pride of being a Korean-American. I have proudly wrote my biographical sketches showing my nationality of S. Korea in the scholar papers and articles published in the international journals. I bet many Korean-Americans really feel ashamed of this unprecedented verdict, as we, in this country, have to feel ashamed of being the same people who eat doggy soup and its meat.

사실, 이러한 판결은 한국계 미국인이라는 나의 마지막 자긍심을 찌그러트려 놓았습니다. 나는 학위논문에서 그리고 국제학술지에 발표한 논문에서 대한민국 국적을 나타내는 나의 약력을 자랑스럽게 기재하였습니다. 그러나 많은 한국계 미국인들이 기상천외한 판결에 대하여 대단히 수치스러움을 느낄 것이 틀림없습니다. 마치 우리가 이 나라에서 보신탕이나 개고기 먹는 사람을 같은 민족으로 둔 사실을 수치스러워하듯이 말이지요.

Chon Sa Neem. I have postponed having a surgery on my right shoulder mainly due to the verdict of the Court. Now, I will have to fix the operation date (probably some time next week) tomorrow (Friday in America). It has been very difficult for me to concentrate on my research once the pain starts in the right shoulder and arm. In addition, before a very pretty, but very aggressive secretary continues to harass me by asking embarrassing questions about the verdict of the Court, I had better run away from her for some time.
